Sukey Hughes is a foremost authority on Wahsi-Japanese papermaking

I'm not sure if you are aware of what sort of work Sukey Hughes has done in her life.
From www. atlanta.creativeloafing.com Quatoyiah Murry writes:
Initially created as a means of wrapping and later writing, hand papermaking became a traditional art form in Japan many centuries ago. In 1978, author Sukey Hughes published her landmark book, Washi: The World of Japanese Paper, in an attempt to keep the technique alive and thriving in the 20th century. With SUKEY HUGHES AND THE WORLD OF JAPANESE PAPER: A RETURN TO THE SOURCE, Hughes brings her expertise to the Robert C. Williams Paper Museum in the form of an exhibition, complete with photos, documents and artifacts gathered during her research in Japan. Through Jan. 29. Free. Mon.-Fri., 9 a.m.-5 p.m. 500 10th St. 404-894-7840. www.ipst.gatech.edu/amp.

New Classes for the New Year(and some old faithful ones)

Shrinemaking Workshop with Sukey Hughes Five Wednesdays starting January 20th - February 17th 1:30 - 4:30 Fee $225

Sukey pioneered the very popular shrinemaking class some years ago at Adult Ed in Santa Barbara. She now is bringing it to the Art Clinic.
Shrines can be any size and range from the sacred to the profane to the humorous to remembrance boxes. We will start with little matchbox shrines that open and shut,
with a surprise inside each “shrine.” From this we will advance to larger boxes, such as Altoid cans, cigar boxes, deep frames, pencil boxes, antique boxes, drawers, even
suitcases make great shrines.
Each class Sukey will do a demonstration, such as the
use of rust and other patinas, gold leafing, crackle glazes, photos transfers, and other
great art techniques. For the first class, matchboxes will be provided. You are
encouraged to bring your own materials too -- oriental papers, animal erasers,
holiday ephemera, vintage or family photos, hearts, lace, ribbon, keys, do-dads -- for
the first class, whatever fits in or on this 2 1/4” x 1 1/2” x 3/8” matchbox. After that
you may continue in any size that fits on the worktable! Paints, glue and unusual
papers and do-dads provided.

Metal clay is fine particles of 99.9% fine silver, which when combined with an organic binder and water can be manipulated like clay. When fired in a kiln or with a torch the binder is burned away leaving the metal in solid form. It can be sculpted, cast and textured to create beautiful fine jewelry. This is the perfect medium for the novice and professional alike.

what happen to August....?

Well we have been busy....Carol has been teaching at the ART CLINIC and for Arts Outreach....and doing shows at Shell Beach and La Arcada. She did manage to fit in some trips to San Fran and San Diego areas. We had a fun time at the Art from Scrap Assemblage show in Santa Barbara. I have been teaching my fantastic students some acrylic classes and did a show at La Arcada and was on board at First Thursday at Santa Barbara Arts. But I have been sneaking off to the beach when I can. It really recharges my batteries. But now Carol and I are gearing up for more classes and fun going-ons for the fall. So stay tuned...

This is the final assignment for one of my continuing students, Jo. She has taken it to a new level of excitement on her own. I just love these pieces!

Felting with Barbara Carr

Above is the beautiful scarf Theresa Laursen was making today at the Art Clinic- Felting with Barbara Carr. Theresa (below) is a fabulous designer. We have seen her incredable metal clay pieces so this felt scarf is is not a surprise!!!
Below, Syd is rolling the piece at least 100 times as advised by Barbara Carr who lead the class.
It is a great upper arm workout with stunning results!!
My lovely and talented daughter Ruth brought me along as her assistent- in the muscle department as she needs no help in design. Doesn't she have a great color sense?

Below, Jennifer Moreno is creating a wonderful tree scene. This is another one I am inspired by.

Below, Colleen is making a wonderful wall hanging for her son's abode.
Below, Barbara is giving advice to Suky, (who by the way is another great designer. Suky put a bird on her scarf, sorry I don't have a good picture. She has it on her flickr site I'm sure.)
I highly recommend this class as felting is fun, easy and so very pleasing, plus you get a good workout!!!!
